She is one of the three Gorgon sister, and is the only mortal among them. Meaning, she can die, while the other two are immortals.
Medusa was a very beautiful maiden, whose beauty made even the goddess jealous.
There are many version of Medusa's story. I like this version the most because it portrays Medusa as someone who's innocent. She's the victim here! Seriously, Greek Gods, stop raping all the beautiful women. Ck

Medusa once had charms; to gain her love. A rival crowd of envious lovers strove. They, who have seen her, own, they ne'er did trace more moving features in a sweeter face. Yet above all, her length of hair, they own. In golden ringlets wav'd, and graceful shone.Her beauty caught the eye of Poseidon, who desired her and proceeded to ravage her in Athena's shrine. The goddess then sought vengeance by transforming Medusa into a hideous creature.

Each wavy lock of her beautiful hair was changed into a venomous snake;Not to mention that anyone who gazed at her directly would be turned into stone.
her once gentle, love-inspiring eyes turned into blood-shot, furious orbs, which excited fear and disgust in the mind of the onlooker;
